Après mine

For one hundred years the Gécamines company has been operating copper mines in the Katanga region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. After all these years, toxic waste have polluted the air and water, creating a veritable artificial desert. The inhabitants have little choice: either they work in the mines for their daily bread, or else they flee the desert of Kipushi in search of fertile land – at the risk of their lives. The issue is taboo for the Congolese media; the only way I could act was to take these pictures.
